ERIC'S POSITIONS

ERIC'S POSITIONS

The issues of Cedar Park, let alone any small to medium sized municipality, essentially revolve around livability, work-ability, and mobility. I believe the work of the council should focus on these areas, leveraging the tremendous city staff that we have, while maintaining prudent stewardship over our precious resources.

Economic Development

Diversification of the Tax Base to Keep Tax Rates Low
Cedar Park has enjoyed considerable successful over the last decade in attracting high performing business in many industries, including technology, healthcare and services.
This does
not happen without effort and a thoughtful strategy.

I was thrilled to provide input into our recent economic development strategic planning effort, which yielded great insights into our future opportunity and offered a path and direction to get there. I will continue to advocate for and promote programs, policies and/or activities that seek
to improve the economic well-being and quality of life for our community.

Why is economic development important? It can lead to a higher standard of living, better healthcare, education, and infrastructure, as well as additional resources to help sustain long term growth. We have a diverse, highly educated and upwardly mobile workforce, and businesses understand the vast benefits that central Texas has to offer. Cedar Park is an important part of one of the most rapidly growing and evolving business centers in the nation.

In addition to recruiting new businesses, we also need to focus on the growth of small businesses in our community. These businesses are the backbone of Cedar Park, and we need to support their continued growth.

Public Safety & Support For First Responders

Supporting our first responders who put their lives on the line every day is crucial for the safety and well-being of our com-munity. They are on the front lines of emergencies, putting
themselves at risk to save lives and property.

As our community continues to grow, we have to ensure that our award-winning Police,Firefighters, and other Emergency Service personnel have everything that they need to respond
to these threats and accomplish their mission every day. Well-supported first responders results in a safer community for everyone, increases trust and strengthens the relationship between the public and those who serve them.

I was proud to support funding for additional personnel, equipment and training in our last several budgets, including a new Mental Health unit within our Police Department last fiscal year. I was also proud to support the joint police/fire training center included in the 2022 bond package.
  • Tools and Training - We need to ensure that our outstanding First Responders have the most current equipment and training. This ensures that our Police, Fire and Emergency services remain the best among their peers.
  • Compensation and Benefits - We need to ensure that our First Responders are adequately compensated for the often dangerous and courageous work they do each day. We should benchmark their compensation and benefits to other cities of our size on a periodic basis to ensure we are able to retain and recruit the best and the brightest.
  • City and Community Support- It is extremely important that our First Responders know that they have the support of both the City Council, City, Leadership and the Community. We need to continue to create a dialogue between all the stakeholders.

Fiscal Discipline and Responsibility

Cedar Park has exemplified strong fiscal excellence over the last decade. That diligence, perseverance and fiscal control resulted in the city being awarded the highest credit rating possible (AAA) on our municipal debt. This is a testament to the hard work of our city staff and prior councils, and it puts our city in a rare position as one of the relatively municipalities of our size with this honor. It was a pleasure to celebrate this wonderful accomplishment with my colleagues and city staff, but we all realize the importance of maintaining the high standards and
expectations. In my experience, it is just as hard to sustain financial excellence as it is to attain it, and I will continue to advocate for strong fiscal and operational controls so that future
generations will benefit from our sound management.

Fiscal discipline:
  • Maintaining a balanced budget and managing debt levels sustainably.
  • Prioritizing essential capital spending & allocating resources efficiently to critical public services like infrastructure.
  • Using economic resources responsibly.
  • Planning for the future: Considering long-term economic risks and opportunities and implementing policies that ensure sustainable fiscal health.
Responsibility:
  • Accountability to taxpayers, including transparency in budgeting and spending decisions to allow citizens to understand how their taxes are being used.
  • Meeting debt obligations: Upholding our hard-fought AAA bond rating and ensuring stable access to future borrowing.
  • Consider the impact of fiscal decisions on future generations of citizens.
  • Balancing competing priorities, including striking a balance between immediate needs and long-term economic stability. Community & Livability

Community &

Livability

A strong community fosters a sense of belonging, safety, and well-being, which all contribute to a high quality of life. In addition, a livable community attracts and retains residents, creating a vibrant and thriving environment. Strong communities also usually have vibrant public spaces that serve as focal points for social interaction and recreation, including parks, libraries, community centers, and green spaces.

To accommodate our growing population and economy, Cedar Park is investing heavily in infrastructure, such as roads and water resources. I continue to support these initiatives, as well as other important ones which promote safety and enjoyment for our citizens as they cross our roads, utilize our trails and access our wonderful parks.

I enthusiastically stand behind our Parks Master Plan, increased trail connectivity, and the Bell Boulevard redevelopment effort, which will serve as a model for future redevelopment within our city. In addition, I voted in support of our recent Master Mobility Plan and was proud to help establish our citizen-led Parks & Trails Foundation.

I believe in a sound forward-looking vision which includes smart development within our commercial, residential and mixed use designated areas bringing uniqueness, character and utility to Cedar Park, while serving the needs of our growing population and commercial base.
